Dusty Roads in Erbil: How Often to Change Your Air Filter

Erbil’s air is hard on engines: dry dust, construction around Ankawa, industrial traffic, and occasional dust storms. The engine air filter is the first barrier. If it packs with grit, the engine starves for air — less power, higher fuel use, and in the worst case a torn filter that lets sand inside. We already explained how this filter differs from the cabin/AC filter. This guide is about timing: how often to change it here, not in a mild-climate handbook.

A practical interval for Erbil

Follow your owner’s manual as a ceiling, not a target. For daily driving on dusty city and peri-urban roads:

• Inspect the engine air filter at every oil change (often every 5,000–8,000 km here)
• Replace it about every 10,000–15,000 km for most Erbil daily drivers — sooner if the pleats are packed
• After a heavy dust storm or a week of unpaved / construction roads, check it immediately — don’t wait for the next sticker date
• If you mostly drive highway with little dust, you may get closer to 15,000–20,000 km — still inspect, don’t assume

How to tell it’s time

• Pleats packed grey or tan so you can barely see the paper folds
• Light doesn’t pass through the filter when you hold it up (compare to a new one)
• Weaker acceleration, higher fuel use, or a rougher idle with no other obvious cause
• Cracked housing, warped seal, or holes in the media — replace even if it looks “only a bit dusty”
• A thick dust cake on the airbox lid when we open it at service

After a dust storm

A single storm can do more than months of city driving. If you drove through heavy dust with windows or the fresh-air intake open, have both the engine air filter and the cabin/AC filter inspected. Replace anything loaded. It’s cheaper than ingesting grit — and you’ll feel the airflow and AC again.
